Salisbury Cathedral Tubular Bell

My motivation for making this bell stems from a family liturgical connection with Salisbury. I am delighted that the bell hangs in the Trinity Chapel beneath the Prisoner of Conscience Window because my grandfather, Fr Harold Hohly; who introduced the Sarum Use to his parish of Christ Church Bronxville, New York, and together with his close friend Percy Dearmer, championed the craftsmanship of media arts used in liturgy; that worship be coupled with a strong sense of social justice and that art broadened its social reach.

My intention throughout, having previously made other smaller sound instruments, was that it may engender quietude and contemplation, as much for an international visitor passing by as in a member of any given congregation. The initial impetus for my work in general arose out of a powerful childhood memory of being stopped in my tracks by the sound of the temple bell in Hong Kong in the 60’s and I too hope to cross borders and boundaries with the sound created.
